Now that a few runs are under our belt and we actually had something happen last night that several of us have been waiting for, I wanted to go into a tiny bit more detail about another facet of the quest that's new for DR Quests in general.
Last night, the intrepid adventurers reached the point in the quest where they laid waste to an evil assassin who was hoping to thwart their escape. Upon dispatching the lout, the first few groups discovered he dropped things like an assassin's dark grey arm sheath with leather straps, an assassin's black wrist pouch, or a shadow-hued broadcloth assassin's backpack. but no one really commented on the fact that he was dropping anything different. In fact, we noticed a couple of people saying that "when he drops that sheath, I want it" when they came close to that point of the quest and then being slightly surprised when something other than the sheath dropped, but not commenting about it otherwise.
Last night, the group discovered there were even more possible options...
The assassin on the quest is set up to randomly drop one exceptional loot item from a pool of possible treasure. The first thing you'll notice is that almost all of them are "assassin's" items, which should already draw a bit of interest, as "assassin" is one of the professions on the restricted list for alterations.
However, within his treasure pool there is a small set of what would best be described as "Epic drops". Purples, if you will.
For example, last night's group discovered that he carried a dull black assassin's repeating crossbow, which they were able to liberate from his corpse. (Quite easily, I might add, since he was sort of dead at the time and offering little resistance.)
There are at least two other "Epic drops" that have yet to be discovered and at least six additional items that consist of things like the backpack, sheath, and wrist pouch that fall into the Rare/Uncommon category, a few of which haven't been seen yet.
I want to make this next part ABSOLUTELY CLEAR:
Every one of these items will be a potential treasure drop on every quest run, including the runs after the "Bonus Runs" in July. EVERY group will get one treasure drop from the assassin and EVERY group has a shot at the Epic drops!
Also, once the July dates are sold out (which shouldn't be long, at this rate), we'll be increasing the limit on ticket purchases per account from 3 up to a higher number, since people will be wanting to repeat the quest and folks will be a lot less troubled with folks in their group having gone before.

Re: KD Quest Update - Epic Loot!? on 07/07/2011 01:55 PM CDT
From our perspective in Plat:
A shadowy assassin glances at you with an air of disdain.
< Moving with powerful grace, you chop a folded tyrium and kertig katana with an elaborately watermarked blade at a shadowy assassin. A shadowy assassin barely fails to block with target shield.
The katana emits a high-pitched whistle and lands a solid hit that collapses the ribcage and bursts the diaphragm in a messy splattering of bloody pink froth.
A shadowy assassin slumps to the ground with a plaintive sigh. "I have failed you, my queen," he whispers, struggling briefly to climb back to his feet and continue his mission. With one final gasp, he collapses, dead at last.
The veil of shadows blinding the shadowy assassin falls away.
[You're incredibly balanced]
[Roundtime 3 sec.]
A pair of Mountain Elves emerge from the shadows, grabbing the corpse of their companion and dragging it back into the darkness with them.
>
Illimin says, "I'd just like to say I hit it."
>
Cie laughs!
> l
[Sorril's Fade, Forest Path]
Fitful glimpses of the night sky are visible through the overhanging forest canopy, but little illumination reaches the forest floor. Dark tree trunks of the surrounding black walnut trees combine with the lack of light to throw the straight path into dreary shadows.
You also see a target shield, a longsword, a faenrae chanter which appears dead and a gossamer veil.
Also here: Ryken, Incorrigible Canyon, Gatherer Uzmam, Illimin who is covered with whitened ridges, Ucu, Pure Spirit Cie, Tezirite Vaelrath, Arathael and Device Scribe Evosh.
Obvious paths: northeast, west.
Should I assume the normal looking target shield and/or longsword were fantastic drops, or was our quest bugged like we already think it was?

So what, are quest participants like... killing each other over these items since they're so rare and only one drops per quest?

<<So what, are quest participants like... killing each other over these items since they're so rare and only one drops per quest?>>
So far, they've pretty much been handling the items like normal treasure, by including it in the loot and taking turns picking at the end, setting a picking order with dice or something similar. In one case, only two characters wanted the backpack and they Roshamboed for it (with 7 ties in a row...that was pretty hilarious to watch). In other cases, one person has claimed one of these rare items and counted that as multiple picks from the incidentals pile or just said "This is mine" and no one really said otherwise.
Each group is (and will be) different.

This was a feature that was added after all the test runs and after the initial runs in Plat. Future runs in any instance will include the new mechanic.

<<You do realize that's a huge slap in the face to the groups that paid money in Plat to get the great loot options, right?>>
It's not a "slap in the face".
All Plat runs got the boosted rate to loot and all Plat runs will get the boosted rate in the future, as well as the Special item. The Plat runs also cost significantly less than the Prime runs and will continue to cost less in the future. Please keep in perspective that this adds one item to the total amount of loot on the entire quest and will be included in all future runs.
I am certain we could re-assemble your group in a room and run the loot spawn if you'd all like to have the opportunity to Roshambo or brawl it out for what could very well end up being a wrist pouch, if you'd like. Not saying the wrist pouch is a bad item, I'm just saying that you're odds of getting the repeating crossbow to drop, bonus or no, are pretty rare.

<<Are you saying this was the only change to the quest?>>
Various parts of the quest have changed from the beta tests and even after the runs in Prime. Are they significant changes? Between the beta runs and the final runs, most definitely. After that, not really. We're basically talking about minor adjustments to mechanics, clues, etc..
<<If it's more than zero, then Plat players paid for a different quest than you sold to Prime. Which isn't what you announced or what was communicated in the Ticket Office.>>
The quest that was announced and the terms communicated in the Box Office are exactly the same in both instances, both before and after the addition of the assassin item and any other items. Folks who signed up for the quest in an instance in July were given a boost to their treasure rolls and are guaranteed the Special Item for participating in the quest.
However, having said all that, we're going to review in details what all has changed and decide if there's anything that needs to be done.

If you consider minor adjustments to include treasure other than belt knives, pouches, and two of the same store grade quality show up, and at times other than at the post treasure room fight, then we're probably going to have to disagree.

I was part of the july 1st, and we finished in about five and a half hours (5.5 hrs). You are supposed to get 6 hrs, I've heard (only heard) that GMs get to make the call to stop the quest, and can and have let the adventurers have additional time (mainly if the adventurers are on the right track but only a little bit behind schedule).
A few suggestions (from someone who has only done two quests, but has done this one):
-Keep an eye on the clock, the puzzles are problems, the critters are problems, and the the time remaining is all you have left.
-Don't get boggled by things, push for answers. Find answers, and have a plan.
-Finally while we didn't stay there long, there are some nice weapons that can be found by looting. Have a plan for how long you want to do this, there are plenty of other things needed to be done besides looting.

I thought that area was under a timer and you didn't get to choose when you left.

<<I thought that area was under a timer and you didn't get to choose when you left.
It is and is also why we didn't stay there for very long. The rest of the advice is sound, push for solutions and work together. You'll never know where you'll get stuck somewhere.
My personal opinion is that critters on quests are usually there to prevent you from solving the puzzle(s) (unless they're a boss or needed to solve the puzzle). Unless they need to be killed, try to move forward.
